Payment arrears among consumers
In recent years, many households in the Netherlands have faced financial challenges. Yet, a positive change seems to be occurring. According to recent data, including research by NIBUD and research by Panel Inzicht commissioned by the Algemeen Dagblad, more and more Dutch people are able to pay their bills on time.
But despite this improvement, a number of groups are being left behind. They continue to struggle with financial problems. For companies, especially in the SME sector, it is therefore essential to remain alert and take adequate measures to prevent payment arrears.
Positive trend in payments
The most recent data from NIBUD shows that the percentage of households struggling to make ends meet has fallen to 32% in 2024. This is a significant improvement compared to recent years. Research commissioned by the AD also shows that currently, one in eight Dutch people struggles to pay their bills, which amounts to almost 2 million people. This is also an improvement compared to last year, when one in five Dutch people had difficulty paying their fixed expenses.
An important factor in this improvement is the increase in income due to wage rises, which enables many people to make ends meet better. In addition, a larger part of the population indicates that they are now able to save monthly. These positive figures are nuanced, however, by the persistent financial stress among a significant part of the Dutch population.
Persistent challenges
Despite the improvements, nearly a quarter of the Dutch population continues to expect that they will have difficulty paying their bills in the future. For this group, financial stress is unfortunately still a daily reality.

Especially young adults, renters, and people with a low or fluctuating income experience more difficulty making ends meet. The NIBUD report shows that these groups often have less control over their financial situation, making them more vulnerable to unexpected expenses and fluctuations in their income.
Furthermore, it appears that, despite better income, a significant group of households continues to struggle with building up a financial buffer. For many people, rising costs, such as energy costs, remain a challenge. These uncertain factors mean that even households that can just make ends meet now can quickly run into trouble when faced with a new setback.
Entrepreneurs, stay alert!
For entrepreneurs, especially in the SME sector, it is important to realize that although the figures show a positive trend, underlying vulnerability remains among many consumers. This means the risk of payment arrears is still real. Do you have private clients? Then it is important that you continue to pay sufficient attention to outstanding invoices.
Contact with clients
Good communication with clients can help to signal and address problems early. Additionally, it can be useful to regularly perform financial check-ups with clients to assess whether they can still meet their payment obligations.
Tight accounts receivable management
It is of crucial importance for companies to have their accounts receivable management in good order and to intervene in a timely manner when clients begin to show payment problems. Think of (automatic) payment reminders as soon as the due date of an invoice has been reached.
Additionally, alternative payment arrangements could be made. Think of payment deferral or a payment arrangement. In doing so, ensure that the agreement works for both parties, both for the client and the company itself.
Collaboration with a collection partner
An effective means to keep payment arrears under control is collaborating with a reliable collection partner. A collection agency can act quickly and efficiently as soon as payment problems arise, which significantly increases the chance of successful collection.
By collaborating with a collection partner, companies can not only improve their cash flow but also maintain their client relationships. At incasso.nl, we always strive for a sustainable solution, where both the company and the client benefit. This lowers the threshold for clients to enter into a conversation about payment problems and increases the chance that overdue payments are still met. For companies in the SME sector, this is a valuable instrument to safeguard financial stability without jeopardizing the client relationship.
Note! Before you can start a collection procedure with a private client, you must first have sent a so-called Wik letter. This is a mandatory legal final reminder that you must send to your client. Naturally, you can send the Wik letter quickly and easily via the incasso.nl app.
Conclusion
Although the economic situation of many Dutch households seems to be improving, a large group of consumers remains financially vulnerable. For companies, this means that vigilance remains required. By actively and proactively assessing payment risks and collaborating with a collection partner, companies can not only strengthen their own financial position but also contribute to the financial well-being of their clients. In this way, both entrepreneurs and consumers can work together towards a financially more stable future.
Things are getting better, but we are not there yet. Stay alert, stay involved, and ensure your company is prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
